LG Uplus will offer bonus, vacation to those who vow not to marry

Beginning next year, employees of LG Uplus will be able to get a bonus and a week-long leave if they vow not to marry, according to the Seoul-based firm on Nov. 24.

LG Uplus noted that those eligible for the special bonus should be older than 38 with at least five years of service at the mobile operator. The amount of bonus would be a one-month salary.

LG Uplus offers the same benefits for those who marry after entering the company.

“The beneficiaries of the new system, which will start on Jan. 1 next year, will not get the same benefits even if they marry later,” an LG Uplus official said.

“In addition, they should work at least two years at the company after receiving the benefits. Otherwise, we worried that some may take advantage of the new program.”

The official said that the new system was geared toward doing away with discrimination against employees who do not get married.

LG Uplus is the first firm to come up with such a scheme among subsidiaries of LG Group, the country’s fourth-largest conglomerate.

In addition, other major conglomerates, including Samsung, Hyundai Motor, and SK groups, have yet to adopt the system.
