This is the fifth of a series highlighting businesswomen related to South Korea’s sprawling business conglomerates, called chaebol. _ ED.

Chey Min-jung, the second daughter of SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won, surprised the country a few times over the past several years with unexpected moves.

First of all, the Beijing University graduate applied for the Navy in 2014 and spent half a year the next year stationed as part of a crew off the coast of Somalia for anti-piracy operations.

She is comparable to the country’s many chaebol heirs, who have come under fire for trying to dodge their mandatory military service.

After her six-month stay off the Somalian coast, Chey served in the second fleet, which guards the Northern Limit Line in the West Sea against the belligerent North Korean regime.

After being discharged in late 2017, she bucked the chaebol trend once again by opting not to get aboard SK Group, South Korea’s third-largest business conglomerate.

Instead, Chey started working for a Chinese private equity firm in 2018.

Most chaebol heirs and heiresses join their family business as amply demonstrated by Chey’s own sibling _ her older sister Chey Yoon-chung who entered SK Biopharmaceuticals in 2017.

Chey Min-jung herself followed suit of her sister by eventually joining SK hynix in 2019. As a major affiliate of SK Group, SK hynix is the world’s second-largest manufacturer of memory chips.

She is reportedly working for INTRA, SK hynix's Washington unit, which deals with the company's policies and trade issues.

During the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Chey was seen to take part in various investment sessions.

She has one older sister, Chey Yoon-chung, one younger brother, and a half-sister _ her parents are now going through a divorce suit, and the half-sister is Chairman Chey’s illegitimate daughter.

There are news reports that Chey Min-jung worked at a convenient store when she was a high school student to earn 4,000 won ($3.3) an hour.

Her maternal grandfather is former President Roh Tae-woo, who passed away in Oct. 2021.
