Kazem vows to come up with Bolt EV, Bolt EUV in 2nd quarter

General Motors Korea CEO Kaher Kazem said on Feb. 23 that the automaker headquartered west of Seoul would come up with a total of 10 electric cars by 2015.

Included in the EV lineup are the Bolt EV, the Bolt EUV, sports utility vehicles, entry-level cars, and premium models. The Bolt EV and the Bolt EUV will be delivered to customers in the second quarter of this year.

“GM Korea will pursue an EV market growth strategy in line with GM's EV market portfolio to expand customer options and experiences,” the CEO said in an online press conference.

Kazem did not disclose whether the Korean factory would roll out the EVs. He just noted that GM Korea’s present facilities would work on a smooth transition to rolling out EVs, phasing out cars powered by internal combustion engines.

He also said that such a strategy is in line with that of the company’s head office in the United States.

GM’s headquarters has pulled out all the stops to preempt the emerging EV market by building its modular platform and battery system, dubbed Ultium.

The company joined hands with South Korean battery maker LG Energy Solution to make a joint venture called Ultium Cells.

Earlier this year, Ultium Cells announced its $2.6 billion investment plan to establish its third U.S. battery cell manufacturing plant in Lansing, Michigan.
