First South Korean leader for ISO
Hyundai Mobis CEO Cho Sung-hwan was appointed as chief of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), according to South Korea’s industry minister on Sept. 16.The General Assembly meeting of the ISO in Abu Dhabi elected Cho as its new head, which will lead the independent global organization for two years beginning in Jan. 2024.In a two-way rivalry, Cho defeated Chinese Academy of Machinery Science and Technology Group Chairman Decheng Wang to succeed current ISO President Ulrika Francke.Cho is the first South Korean to run for the ISO presidency.Up until now, a total of six Asians have taken charge of the Geneva-based outfit. Japan and India produced the most ISO chiefs with two, respectively, chased by Singapore and China with one.Founded in 1947, the ISO is an international standard development organization composed of more than 120 full-fledged members. As of this year, it works in up to 167 countries across the globe.South Korea gained ISO membership in 1963. Currently, more than 40 Koreans are serving as the leaders and secretaries of various ISO committees.In terms of the number of active members of the ISO, Korea ranks eighth according to the organization.“As South Korea assumes the ISO leadership, we will be able to improve our standing globally and expand our corporations’ efforts for standardization activities,” the industry ministry said. “Such efforts would contribute to global standardization.”Hyundai Mobis is an auto part manufacturer.
