11 Hyundai vehicles earn high ratings after crash tests

The 2019 Hyundai Veloster received a top safety pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for this year after going through one of the industry’s most demanding vehicle crash tests.

Hyundai announced June 1 that all of its 11 tested vehicles received the honors from the institute. They are Accent, Elentra, Elentra GT, Ioniq Hybrid, Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid, Kona, Santa Fe, Santa Fe XL, Sonata and Tucson on top of Veloster.

The Seoul-based company said that the Veloster gained high ratings for both its standard and optional front crash prevention systems, both of which avoided collisions in the institute’s track tests at 12 mph and 25 mph.

In order to qualify as a top safety pick, any vehicle should receive good ratings in the driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint tests, according to the IIHS.

Also necessary are an acceptable or good rating in the passenger-side small overlap front test, an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention and an acceptable or good headlight rating.

In other words, the institute’s award ensures the vehicle’s safety on the road, observers point out.

Hyundai Motor America Director Scott Margason expressed the automaker’s commitment to safety.

“Safety is a top priority for Hyundai and its engineering team, and we are proud to hear that Veloster now joins the list of Hyundai models that have achieved this recognition from the IIHS,” he said.

“The Veloster is a prime example of a sleek and exhilarating vehicle to sit behind the wheel of, while still offering the advanced safety features available across our Hyundai lineup.”
