Latin American country’s 201st Independence Day marked

To commemorate the 2022 Peru Independence Day, Peru Amb. H.E Daul Jesus Enrique Matute Mejia threw a diplomatic reception in a downtown hotel in Seoul on July 28.

About the significance of Peru Independence National Day, the Peruvian envoy seems to commemorate it as his last commemorating event.

“It has always been a well-accepted premise that each country looks up for its own welfare year by year, willing to bring progress and well-being to its people. Peru is no exception to this rule,” Mejia said.

“We will continue moving forward with our national development, stimulating investment, and our high-quality exports to the world. We are now creating new jobs to recover the ones we lost during the pandemic, and we are committed to bringing down the poverty levels that this situation has provoked among our people.”

The ambassador said that Peru would deal with the global headache of inflationary pressure.

“In spite of all the existing problems in the international trade arena, like the armed confrontation that has brought high inflation rates everywhere, affecting the global supply chain, especially in transport, Peru is well-confident that the serenity and good understanding will prevail among the nations in the world, and we could return sooner to our normal interchanges and the development of our peoples,” he said.

With regard to Peru’s investment circumstances for Korean investors, the Peruvian envoy noted that more than 40 Korean companies had maintained a presence in the Latin American country.

Included in the list is SK Innovation, one of South Korea’s largest oil refiners. It has taken part in the exploitation of gas from “Camisea” in Cusco.

Likewise, Dohwa Engineering and Hyundai Engineering & Construction, together with the Korean Airports Corporation, have a stake in the supervision and construction of the Chincheros Airport in Peru. This new project will represent the entrance of tourists to our wonder of the world: Machu Picchu.

“Peru represents a gateway to Latin America, not only because of its strategic position in the Pacific Ocean but also because of its macroeconomic stability and respect for Foreign Investment,” Mejia said.

“This has allowed that in the last four years, there has been more than $ 4 billion of Korean investment in Peru.”

Mejia also mentioned the economic cooperation between the two countries since they signed a free trade agreement in 2011.

Peru increased its exports of copper minerals, lead minerals, liquefied natural gas, and other hydrocarbons to Korea. Agricultural products like avocado, mango, banana, and coffee also have found customers in Korea.

Diplomatic cooperation

“On the other hand, Peru will host the APEC leaders’ reunion in 2024, and Korea will do so in 2025. Also, it is important to mention that Peru is a founding member of the Pacific Alliance, with Chile, Mexico, and Colombia,” the diplomat said.

“This mechanism has promoted economic and global integration among its members. Right now, Pacific Alliance has approved the beginning of negotiations with Korea, which aspires to become an Associated State with the Alliance.”

He has expressed Peru’s recognition to the government of Korea for its support of its aspiration to become a member of the OECD mechanism. This February, Peru formally received the invitation to become a plain member of the OECD.

Many took part in Peru’s Independence Day event, including Azerbaijan Amb. Ramzi TEYMUROV, Tunisia Amb. Nabih EL ABED, Turkey Amb. Durmuş Ersin ERÇÍN, Holy See Amb. Archbishop Alfred XUEREB, Norway Amb. Frode SOLBERG, Laos Amb. Thieng BOUPHA, Myanmar Amb. Thant Sin, Singapore Amb. Eric TEO Boon Hee, and Angola Amb. Edgar Augusto Brandão Gaspar MARTINS.
