Art fans commemorate 10th anniversary of great painter’s passing

South Korea’s H&U Company announced on April 8 that the outfit's exhibition of painter Kim Heungsou in Seoul had attracted so many art fans over the past month.

In consideration of such positive feedback, H&U Company said that it would extend the exhibition by almost a month to May 3. It started midway through March.

H&U Company brought a host of masterpieces by painter Kim at the exhibition, which has been held in Space Rad located in southern Seoul.

“We have tried to display so many masterpieces of painter Kim throughout his career at the ongoing exhibition,” an H&U company official said.

“We hope that as many art fans as possible will be able to watch and feel the art pieces of painter Kim.”

Sometimes called the “Picasso of Korea,” Kim was touted as one of the greatest painters of contemporary art not only in Korea but also across the world.

Born in 1919 in North Korea under Japanese rule, He graduated from Tokyo Art School. After the independence of the country, he taught at Seoul Art High School and Seoul National University.

In 1955, he studied painting in Paris and his early masterpieces were submitted to Salon d’Automne.

He held an individual art showcase and hosted exhibitions several times in Europe, including France and Russia. Later, his works also gained popularity in the United States.

Between 1968 and 1980, he went as an exchange professor of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.

He died in 2014 at the age of 94.
