Former Shinhan CEO will boost women’s basketball league
Former Shinhan Financial Group Chief Executive Officer Shin Sang-hoon took the helm at the Women’s Korean Basketball League (WKBL) on July 3 as the outfit’s 10th chief.
The WKBL held a meeting last month to pick Shin as its new head. Out of six votes, four selected Shin who competed with three other candidates.
Shin will spearhead the league for the next three years.
Shin got aboard Shinhan Bank, one of the largest lenders in South Korea, to eventually become its head. He was also the president of the holding company Shinhan Financial Group.
In 2004 when he was in charge of Shinhan Bank, the company bought a women’s basketball team that dominated the league as champions between 2007 and 2012.
“This is a great honor to be appointed to this position. I am very thankful because from now on I will be able to carry out projects, which I could not try as a head of a basketball team in the past,” he said.
“At the same time, I feel a grave sense of responsibility.”
