Donation from 2 community stores will provide housing assistance
Starbucks Korea announced on Nov. 18 that it has donated the full month of August revenue from its two community stores to support housing for descendants of independence activists during the Japanese colonial rule during 1910 and 1945.
The company noted that the initiative reflected its dedication to remembering the sacrifices of Korea’s patriots.
The donation ceremony took place on Nov. 14 at a Starbucks store, ahead of Korea’s Day of the National Patriotic Martyrs, which fell on Nov. 17.
The contribution will be directed toward descendants of independence activists facing financial hardship, according to Starbucks Korea.
To commemorate the 80th anniversary of Korea’s Liberation this year, Starbucks Korea pledged in August to set aside all revenue from the month at its two community stores for families of independence heroes.
While the company has long operated a program donating some amount per item sold at its community stores, this marks the first time Starbucks has contributed the entirety of monthly revenue from selected stores for this cause.
Notices were placed in both stores during August to increase customer participation and raise awareness of the sacrifice made by independence activists.
Kim Ji-young, who oversees ESG efforts at Starbucks Korea, said the initiative was especially meaningful because customers were able to join in showing support for the next generation of independence heroes’ families.
“We will continue pursuing sincere and impactful initiatives to honor the dedication of those who fought for Korea’s freedom,” she said.
Brief for Environmental, Social, and corporate Governance, ESG is the three core pillars used to assess a company’s long-term sustainability and its broader impact on society.
In recent years, the term has gained significant traction in the global business community and has become one of the most talked-about frameworks shaping corporate strategy.
