Korean firm’s research lab safety management recognized
South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem announced on Nov. 25 that it has received the Minister of Science and ICT Award after being selected as a top research lab for safety management.
The award was given during the “2025 Research Lab Safety Week,” held on Nov. 25 at Korea University to promote safe research environments.
This year’s event held particular significance as it marked the 20th anniversary of the Research Lab Safety Act, according to Hyundai Rotem.
Since 2013, the ministry has operated a safety certification program to identify and expand exemplary models of research-lab safety management nationwide.
The facility recognized as a top-performing research lab this year is Hyundai Rotem’s hydrogen mobility test lab, which focuses on the advanced development and testing of fuel cell systems for hydrogen-powered railway vehicles.
The lab had already earned certification as an “Excellent Research Lab in Safety Management” from the ministry in February, Hyundai Rotem noted.
Selection for top research labs was based on evaluations conducted from Sept. 2024 to Aug. 2025 among more than 300 certified facilities.
Of these, 20 labs were chosen as top performers, with only the highest-ranking nine receiving the Ministerial Award. The remaining eleven received awards from the head of the National Research Safety Headquarters.
“We are pleased to receive the ministerial commendation in recognition of its continuous efforts to improve research environments,” a Hyundai Rotem representative said.
“We will continue investing in safety so that researchers can focus on their work with confidence in a secure and well-managed environment.”
